Thanksgiving 2011

Well my stateside family are gathering today to celebrate Thanksgiving

Below is a brief idea of what Thanksgiving is for .

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a holiday celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November. It has officially been an annual tradition since 1863, when during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26. As a federal and popular holiday in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays of the year. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season.

The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated to give thanks to God for guiding them safely to the New World. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days, providing enough food for 13 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans. The feast consisted of fish (cod, eels, and bass) and shellfish (clams, lobster, and mussels), wild fowl (ducks, geese, swans, and turkey), venison, berries and fruit, vegetables (peas, pumpkin, beetroot and possibly, wild or cultivated onion), harvest grains (barley and wheat), and the Three Sisters: beans, dried Indian maize or corn, and squash. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"—days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.

Here in England we do not Celebrate Thanksgiving but I have to say there are many things I am very thankful to God for today.

Firstly  friends of the family heard today that their daughters had got into school in Dubai.
Next is that AJ is  nearly ready to move to her new home.
Then obviously I am very thankful that Gemma is doing well in her pregnancy in the next month we will be meeting baby Cook for the first time.
I am also Thankful that I have food on the table tonight and a roof over my head , it reminds me that there are so many people that do not have homes and are so poor that they can not feed themselves.

So I just want to say a hugeTHANK YOU to God for all the good things in my life
Happy Thanksgiving

We American's sometimes take advantage of our major Holidays. We worry too much about what will be served and what team is playing football on the TV. Thanks for reminding us how blessed we truly are.....

Dear Tracy,
I remember your blog from the first round of Alphabet Thursday. You have changed the look of it though. It really is lovely. I appreciate that some one from England would be the one to post about the history of the holiday:). Even though it is familiar. I love reading it again, and they did eat some things then that we don't now. We do have much to be thankful for every day. Thanks for sharing your blessings.

No matter where you live, it's good to be thankful! Over here, we celebrate Thanksgiving in October. Not long til that baby arrives!

Oh Tracy, I really enjoyed reading your joyous post in the midst of your health issues!

Sometimes it is easy to focus on the bad and the worries...

...and we forget how many good things surround us all.

I'm glad you had this sweet moment of reflection...

...and even more glad you took a moment to share it with us.

Thank you!
